Sustainable, Affordable and Scalable Water Solutions to Mitigate Extreme Weather Events
Sponsored by
Moderator: Mr. Gavin Van Tonder, Executive Director, ENOWA Water, NEOM, Saudi Arabia
Description: Projected longer‐term droughts (more intense and frequent as a result of climate change) and chronic water scarcity in some regions, underscore the need to store more water as a back-up resource to manage climate extremes. Depleted aquifers have been used to store water by substituting surface water use for groundwater pumping (conjunctive use, CU) or recharging groundwater with surface water (Managed Aquifer Recharge, MAR). This panel will focus on the use of reclaimed water reuse, enhancing and protecting natural buffers and barriers. The panel will also explore harvesting rainwater storage and reuse.

Moderators: Mrs. Patricia Lopez, Senior Water Specialist, Water Global team , World Bank, Spain, and, Mr. Naoll C. Mary, Senior Operations Officer, Upstream Municipal and Natural Resources Infrastructure, IFC, USA
Description: Desalination and reuse projects lend themselves well to be developed under PPP arrangements (for the construction, financing, operation and maintenance) under a project finance and/or blended finance approach (for de-risking). There are also opportunities/new models for PPPs under various contractual financial structuring arrangements/structures through hybrid PPP models (HAM model/performance-based payment for O&M/revenue securitization/escrow accounts) for various other WSS infrastructure and services including water supply, wastewater treatment, etc.

Exploring the Drivers, Boundaries, and Opportunities of Unconventional Water Sources for Industrial Applications
Moderator: Mr. Neil Reynolds, Chairman of the Advisory Board, SWCC, UK
Description: As worsening water scarcity, rising population, and growing industrial demand continue to put pressure on conventional sources of water, we must embrace a circular resilient water economy. Technological progress is increasingly providing new opportunities for the diversification of water supply sources in different industries, both through the reclamation and reuse of regenerated water and the desalination of brackish and saltwater. Digitalization of the water industry is but an example, if a relevant one, through AMI infrastructure, digital twins, intelligent asset management, GIS, AI, etc. Green hydrogen is also gaining momentum, partly due to the fiscal stimulus from resilience and recovery packages in the most advanced economies. This panel will explore how technology is shaping the future of unconventional water sources in industry, as well as other enabling factors needed such as changes in regulation, centralisation, and corporate culture for the uptak.

Long-term Water Security in Cities
Moderator: Dr. Gonzalo Delacámara, Director, IE Centre for Water & Climate Adaptation, Spain
Description: Given that irrigation agriculture is responsible for the most relevant share of water withdrawal worldwide, water challenges have long been seen through a rural lens given their implications on agriculture and food security. However, water security is increasingly becoming a prominent urban issue too. By 2050, 55% of the global population is expected to live in cities above 50,000 inhabitants. Water demand is expected to increase by 55% by then, especially due to growing demand from manufacturing, power generation, and domestic use. As a consequence of climate change, population growth, and rapid urbanization, cities will continue to face multiple pressures linked to deteriorating water quality and hygiene, increasing natural hazards (floods, droughts, sea-level rise), conflicts over water allocation, and aging infrastructure.

Moderators: Mrs. Marta Verde, CEO, GS Inima, Spain, and Mr. Alejandro Sturniolo, Global Head of Water Reuse and Strategic Partnerships, H2O Innovation, Spain
Description: Water scarcity and its impact on the environment and human life have become critical global concerns. This panel session aims to shed light on the collective responsibility of individuals, organizations, and governments in addressing wáter scarcity. “Water Positive” refers to an approach beyond mere conservation efforts. It entails actively replenishing and restoring water sources to achieve a sustainable balance. Being “Water Negative” implies contributing to water scarcity through wasteful practices and inadequate resource management.
During the panel session, experts from various fields will share their insights and initiatives toward achieving water positivity. The discussion will revolve around three key areas:

In Conversation – Water, Water, Everywhere: Reimagining Desalination and Reuse to Deliver Climate Resilience
Desalination and reuse, also known as non-conventional water resources, are often marginal or absent in the general understanding of climate change and climate resilience. However, with 90% of climate impact felt through the water cycle – floods, droughts, and unpredictable rainfall – the ability to create new water resources is more important than ever.
Four IDA Young Leaders (YLP) will share their vision of a world with desalination and reuse 50 years from now without new inventions.
